Description:
As soon as Tunisia became independent in 1956 Hammamet which used to be a petty fishing village started to exploit its charm and slowly became a popular Mediterranean resort. Today Hammamet is an important wellness resort offering its guests first-class thalassic therapy. The city is also famous for its fine wines and jasmine essence with many souvenir products made from this essential oil. Like the other resorts of Tunisia Hammamet offers such activities as scuba-diving, golf and amusement parks for families. Despite a small population of about 70’000 inhabitants, the locals are very welcoming to visitors, working in the numerous hotels, bars and night clubs for the benefits of the guests. The antique lovers will find plenty of interesting sites to visit like the ruins of the Roman baths after which Hammamet was named. Medina or the Old Town and the gardens on the Cape Bon founded in the 15th century are also worth a visit.
Climate
Hammamet benefits from a Mediterranean climate. The summers are hot and arid and the winters cool and rainy. Summers last from the end of April till the beginning of November. June and August are the hottest months of the year with temperatures rising above 30 °C (86° F). The best time to visit Hammamet is at the beginning and at the end of the summer when the temperature is between 20 and 30 °C (68-86 °F). The average winter temperature is 12-16 °C (53-60 °C).Transport
There is no airport directly in Hammamet but the city can be reached by taxi from other international airports like Tunis, Monastir, Djerba and Tabarka. There is also a train service from Tunis to Bir-Bou-Regba which is 6 km away from Hammamet.
