As soon as Tunisia became independent in 1956 Hammamet which used to be a petty fishing village started to exploit its charm and slowly became a popular Mediterranean resort. Today Hammamet is an important wellness resort offering its guests first-class thalassic therapy. The city is also famous for its fine wines and jasmine essence with many souvenir products made from this essential oil. Like the other resorts of Tunisia Hammamet offers such activities as scuba-diving, golf and amusement parks for families. The antique lovers will find plenty of interesting sites to visit like the ruins of the Roman baths after which Hammamet was named. Medina or the Old Town and the gardens on the Cape Bon founded in the 15th century are also worth a visit.

There is no airport directly in Hammamet but the city can be reached by taxi from other international airports like Tunis, Monastir, Djerba and Tabarka. There is also a train service from Tunis to Bir-Bou-Regba which is 6 km away from Hammamet.
