Houmt Souk is the biggest city on the Djerba Isle which is connected with the Eastern shore of Tunisia by an ancient Roman road. The population of Houmt Souk is 60 thousand men. Most of them are occupied in tourism and trade. The latter is important because thecity got its name aftrer the marketplace (‘souk’). On markets of Houmt Souk you can purchase hand-crafted goods of local manufacturers, olive oil, incense and fruit grown in the orchards of the Djerba Isle. Moreover, the biggest crocodile farm of the whole Mediterranean area is situated here. Besides the marketplace might be interesting with the amount of mosques and synagogues, the ethnographic museum and the Borj-El-Kebir fortress situated on the sea shore. And of course, the most attractive part of Houmt Souk is its enchanting sandy beach.
Climate
The climate on Djerba Island is not very different from the Mediterranean climate of Tunisia however here the fresh breeze from the sea is much stronger. August is the warmest month in Houmt Souk. The temperature is about +30-35 °C (86-95 °F). January is the coldest with +10-12 °C (50-53 °F). Raining and even snowing however a weather like this does not usually last longer than a week.Transport
Djerba-Zarzis International Airport is the closest to Houmt Souk and provides connection of the Djerba Island with most of the European cities, including London and Manchester. It also receives local flights from all Tunisian airports. There is a direct bus route between Tunis and Houmt Souk. It is also possible to travel to the Djerba Isle by a ferry from El Jorf.
