Description:
Monastir is a homelike Tunisian resort situated on the shore of the Mediterranean Sea. It got its name after the fortress founded by the Byzantine warrior-monks in the 5th century A.D. on the spot of the ancient Roman city Ruspina. Modern Monastir is the administrative centre of the province and the religious capital of Tunisia. The population of the city is about 70 thousand men occupied in commerce, trade, fishing and tourism. Monastir is a perfect place for a hasteless beachfront leisure. The history lovers might be interested with the mediaeval fortress of Hartem, the Islamic museum and the mighty mausoleum of the first Tunisian president Habib Bourguiba. Those who love activities would be attracted by the yacht-club, the golf-club, horseback riding areas and diving.

Monastir-Habib Bourguiba International Airport receives flights from mosf of the West Euoropean countries. Another way of getting to the city is by train which goes to Monastir from the capital city of Tunis and from Sousse. The tourist trains travel along the Mediterranean shore.
