SOUSSE
Description:
Sousse is the third biggest city of Tunisia. Its population is about 170 thousand men. Today Sousse is one of the most popular resorts but it is also famous for its vast olive plantations, orchards and a busy port. Sousse attracts about 1.2 million tourists per year. One of its most famous sights is the medieval old town – medina which is included into UNESCO World Heritage list. There are also several Roman villas and the Carthagian catacombs outside the city. Another popular tourist attraction is the Roman amphitheatre situated in El-Jem which is almost as big as the famous Coliseum in Rome. The luxurious area of Port El-Kantaoui was designed specially for tourists so you may find all kind of activities there – the yacht-club and the golf-club, the amusement park and lots of bars, cafes and discos. Like in most of the Tunisian resorts you will be offered a trip to the Sahara desert and all kinds of thalassotherapy.
Climate
The best time to visit Sousse is from the end of April to the beginning of November. In hot and arid summer the air gets warm to +25-30 °C (80-86 °F). The weather is influenced by the Sahara desert. Winters are humid and cool, affected by Mediterranean cyclones. The temperature hardly rises above +12 °C (55 °).Transport
The nearest airport is in Monastir. As a busy port Sousse is also a busy railway junction. So it is easy to get into the city by train from Tunis, Monastir and more distant places. Sousse is connected with the capital of Tunisia by a highway. There are multiple bus routes to Sousse from other Tunisian cities. Each week a car ferry sets of from Italian town Trapani to Sousse. Private express boats travel from one city to another more often. Inside the city it is possible to travel by tuk-tuks and horse-drawn carriages.
