Founded as a fortification, for three centuries Agra was ruled by the Great Mogol Empire, was its capital and residence. Agra can boast of its rich history. During the six centuries of its existence Agra was attacked by Jats, Persians and Afghans, suffered devastation caused by Marathas. In the 1st half of the 19th century Agra was part of the British Empire, this was the time of its trading and industrial prosperity. Thanks to its rich history the city has a great number of beautiful architectural buildings and monuments, the most famous of them include: Tāj Mahal, the Pearl Mosque, Agra Fort. Agra today is an important transportation junction, a major industrial centre and one of the most popular destinations in the world.
