MADRAS
Description:
A capital of the Indian state, a major administrative centre and the fourth most populous city in the south-western India. It was founded by the British as a trading colony of the East India Company and up to the 17th century it was called ‘Madras’. In 1996 the name was changed by the ruling party to Chennai. The city has a rich history, first settlements emerged here in the first century AD. Since that time the territory of modern Chennai became part of multiple kingdoms, it was a Portugue port and a Dutsch fort. But Chennai owes its rapid development mainly to the British: they erected here a fort around which the city as it’s known nowadays appeared. Later it was ruled by the French but then was governed by the English again, it is they who made it a big trading city and an important port, right as it was planned originally. Chennai today is a major industrial and financial centre with a well-developed car industry, stock market and international banks branches.
Climate
It is wet and hot here, there are no big temperature fluctuations throughout a year, which is an effect of a monsoon climate. The heaviest rainfall occurs from the end of September till mid-November. The city’s close vicinity to Bay of Bengal results in multiple cyclones. May and June are the hottest months, January and February are considered the coolest.Transport
The city has an International Chennai Airport, the third in India in passenger turnover. More than 30 national and international companies operate domestic and international flights. There are two major ports. Chennai is the centre of the southern railway, it is connected to other major cities of the country through a national highway network.
