Description:
Jakarta is the capital and the biggest city in Indonesia. It is situated on the northwest extremity of Java Island. Jakarta population is about 9,5 million people. City itself is cultural, political and economic center of Indonesia. Jakarta was found in IV century and changed many names: Sunda, Kelapa, Jayakarta, Batavia…Today Jakarta is called “the big durian” by analogy with New-York (“the big apple”) implying not only big size of the city but also shocking smell on the face of it, poverty and disorder. However after staying here for some time you will see the other side of the city. Jakarta attracts people from all over the country and native culture Betavi can be met rather on the outskirts as center is inhabited by immigrants Menang and Java. By the way their dialects and culture are very different from each other. In the city center you can see Old Town with museums, galleries and more. Among them stands out Taman Mini Indonesia Indah, museum of miniature “Beautiful Indonesia”, Jakarta historic museum, Indonesia National Museum. Jakarta is a city of contrasts, it offers real colour, rich history and interesting time.
Climate
Climate is tropical monsoon. Rain season lasts from October to June and brings serious precipitations. Dry season is from July to September.Transport
The nearest airport is Soekarno Hatta International Airport, it consists of three terminals. Jakarta has several railway stations that connects city with other parts of Java: Stasiun Gambir, Stasiun Pasar Senen, Stasiun Jatinegara and Stasiun Kota. The best way to get around the city is by bus (bus network is well developed), bayai (small motorbike with cabin for several people), rek (moto roller taxi). Electric trains connect Jakarta center with suburbs. Traffic is chaotic and provides shock for the first time.
