POTSDAM
Description:
An East German city that is the motherland for more than one hundred and fifty thousand people. The city is the capital of Brandenburg. Potsdam is situated on the banks of the River Havel twenty kilometers southwest of Berlin. For the first time Potsdam was mentioned in chronicles in 993. In 1660 this town became a hunting residence of Frederick William I, and then the royal family of Prussia. Magnificent palaces were mostly built by Frederick the Great. Park San Souci is a classic English garden. Palace interiors are made mainly in the style rocaille. From the 17 of July to the 2 of August 1945 Potsdam Conference was held in Cecilienhof on the outskirts of the city. After the fall of the Berlin Wall, Potsdam became the capital of Brandenburg. In 1990 all the cultural monuments in Potsdam were included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.
