TRIER
Description:
According to legend, Trier was founded in 2050 B.C. Perhaps, it isn’t so, but it has precisely arisen before all other German cities. It was founded by the emperor August, and was called Augusta Treverorum initially. Trier has reached its prosperity in the second century A.D., gradually turning to safe imperial residence under the name «Northern Rome». When it was won by francs in 480, it became the main evidence of a decline of Roman Empire. Monuments of the Roman epoch have preserved their original appearance till our time. Church Liebfrauenkirche and the main city cathedral are included in the list of UNESCO World Heritage. Into the bargain, Trier has become world-famous as Charles Marx’s birthplace.
Climate
There is a mild, temperate, continental climate. The average temperature in summer is 20 Celsius degrees, in winter - 2-4 degrees below zero.Transport
The city is located on Mosselle, at a distance of ten kilometers from border with Luxembourg. The main railway station is situated some kilometers east of the Old city. If you want to get to Porta-Nigra gate (the main symbol of Trier), from station it is necessary to go along the Bahnhofstrabe street.
