WERNIGERODE
Description:
Wernigerode is located in Saxony-Anhalt. This is a very small old town; its population is just about 33 thousand people. The first settlement on this spot has appeared in the ninth century, at least, as it is written in the chronicles in 1566 - "Varingerode" was known long ago (in 938). In the early twelfth century, a count Adalbert began construction of the fortress, which later became famous Wernigerode castle. Descendants of Count lived there until 1929, then in its walls a museum was opened. In this beautiful city a popular Soviet film of Zakharov "The adventures of baron Munchausen" was shot, so to many tourists, who come here from Russia, the castle, the town hall, houses and streets of the city seem vaguely familiar. Wernigerode was not as many as others German cities destroyed by the bombing of World War II. There was no fighting, so the medieval town is well preserved. The city is located near the Mount Brocken, where according to local legends witches have their coven.
