OBERAMMERGAU
Description:
Oberammergau is a German commune situated in the Bavaria land on the banks of the Amper River. Oberammergau is known first of all by the performance devoted to the Passion of Our Lord (it can be seen only once in 10 years) and by famous murals Lüftlmalerei. How did the tradition to dramatize the life and Passion appear? In 1633 when the plague raged in the city, residents promised to perform regularly scenes from Christ’s life in the hope for rescue from the disease. Until 1803 Oberammergau was the place where the Supreme Court seated. The famous attractions are the former peasant yard (Ehemaliges Bauernhaus), castle Ammerschlössl, historic museum, St Peter and Paul Church and St George Chapel.
