AGIOS NIKOLAOS

Description:

Agios Nikolaos is a popular resort town with a small freshwater lake. It is situated on the Crete Island and built on the remains of an ancient town. It is not recommended to swim within the precincts of a town, but there are perfect beaches just 20 minutes walking distance from the center of Agios Nikolaos (for example, Almiros). Agios Nikolaos is the best point from which to go to the Spinalonga Island that id famous for its Barbarossa’s caves and old leper colonies. The town itself worth one or two days while you can walk around its romantic streets, explore archeological museum and local tavernas.

Climate

Climate is Mediterranean. If you want to enjoy sun and warm water then come here from June to October. The hottest month is August, temperature can reach 35C. In winter time temperature usually doesn’t fall under 10C, rains are frequent.

Transport

Crete has two international airports – in Iraklion (100 km from Agios Nikolaos) and in Sitia (40 km)/ Bus communication connects Agios Nikolaos with many cities of the island. You also can explore the island on a car or a motorbike.
