ELOUNDA
Description:
Elounda is a small fishing village and in the same time luxurious resort in the northern part of Crete. Elounda is situated on the top of a small mount and in clear days (that means almost everyday) there are amazing views on the Mirabella Bay and the eastern part of the island. The town beach has a “blue flag” sign, tavernas offer local dishes, in the suburbs you can find old walls remains, windmills and destroyed stone bridge. Elounda is the closest town to Spinalonga Island, where there is a former leper colony and Venetian fort. Spinalonga is uninhabited nowadays but extremally popular among tourists. BBC made some series of a popular film “Who pays the ferryman” in Elounda.
Climate
Climate is Mediterranean. If you want to enjoy sun and warm water then come here from June to October. The hottest month is August, temperature can reach 35C. In winter time temperature usually doesn’t fall under 10C, rains are frequent.Transport
The main island airport is situated near Iraklion, from Elounda there run several buses. Also Crete can be reached by ferry from Piraeus or Rhodes.
