Description:
Patras are situated in the southern part of the Peloponnesus peninsula on the Gulf of Patras shore. It is connected with mainland Greece by outstanding Rio-Antirio Bridge. Patras are not only one of the biggest cities and ports of the country (population is about 200 thousand people) but also a serious science center. In Patras there are plenty of unique attractions: Odeon of II century, Achaia Clauss wine factory (one of the most visited places of the city), old castles, lighthouse with a café, Turkish hot baths, excellent archeological museum and more. In February Patras hold colourful carnival that is considered to be the third largest in world (after Rio de Janeiro and Venice) and in 2006 the city became European Culture Capital. Not only tourists come to Patras, it is also important pilgrimage destination as the local St.Andrews Church keeps relics of St.Andrews the Apostle.
Climate
Climate is Mediterranean, very comfortable. Winter is mild and wet (January temperature is 6-15C), summer is dry and moderately hot (in August temperature can rich 35C). Spring and autumn are transition seasons with light precipitations.Transport
Patras are known as western gates to Greece as numerous ferries come here from Italy. Patras are served by its own airport but flights are seasonal. Also there are floatplanes to some Ionian Islands. Athens are about 215 km away, you can get there by train or bus.
