POROS

Description:

Poros is a small island where Athenians love to come on their weekends. It is situated in the Sardonic Gulf very close to the Peloponnesus land just 60 km away from Piraeus. Nature of Poros is immensely beautiful and diverse. Upland gives place to sandy beaches, extend territories are covered with greenery and forests (pine or even lemon). Firs settlements appeared on these territories in the Bronze Age, throughout the Byzantine Empire epoch it was visited by pirates and in the XIX century the island became Russian naval base for some time. The main Poros attractions are: Poseidon sanctuary remains, the Convent, city Poros and archeological museum.

Climate

Climate is Mediterranean. Winter is mild, airfrosts and snow are extremely rare. Summer is hot and dry, sometimes there are no any precipitations for months. Because of the Mediterranean Sea proximity autumn is long and the spring starts later than usually.

Transport

Poros can be easily reached by ferry from Athens and Piraeus (the journey will take no more than 1 hour). Road network on the island is very well developed so you can use bus or rent a car or a motorbike.
