AGRIGENTO

Description:

Agrigento is a city on the southern coast of Sicily. In the past Agrigento was famous for being one of the biggest cities of the Greek civilization with the name Akragas. Today it is primarily known for its great architectural heritage, left from the Greeks. The main sights of Agrigento are located in so-called Valley of Temples - a chain of five temples built in 6-5 century B.C. This ensemble is sometimes compared with Acropolis in Athens because of its big dimensions and perfect condition. The Valley was included in UNESCO%27s world heritage list. In the first week of February in Agrigento the almond tree festival is celebrated, it-s worth visiting.

Climate

The weather in Agrigento is typical Mediterranean one with hot dry summers and mild rainy winters. However the air is cooled by the African wind sirocco.

Transport

The closest airports are in Palermo (2 hours by train), in Catania (2,5 hours by train). In Agrigento there is a train station, also you can get here by car.
