Description:
Ravenna is a city in the Emilia-Romagna region in Italy. The city was the capital of three different states during its history: the Western Roman Empire, the Kingdom of the Ostrogoths and the Exarchate of Ravenna - the Byzantine dominion in Italy. Ravenna has kept large heritage of the three epochs, the city is literally full of sites from the UNESCO%27s World heritage list. Mausoleum of Galla Placidia, Neonian Baptistery, Arian Baptistery, Mausoleum of Theodoric and some other structures present the architectural patrimony of Ravenna. The interiors of most of building are decorated with mosaics of Byzantine style. Similar mosaics are preserved only on Nicea and Istanbul, the former capital of the Byzantine Empire. Mausoleum of Theodoric presents the only monument of Gothic architecture and the only saved tomb of a barbarian king. Also Ravenna houses the tomb of Dante - the Italian national hero and the author of "Divine comedy".

The closest airport is located in Forli (20 km) and in Bologna (80 km). To reach Forli is possible by bus, to Bologna - by train, Ravenna has the railway station.
