Description:

Reggio Calabria is the biggest city of Calabria south region in Italy and the capital of the same name province. Reggio Calabria together with Naples and Taranto has the most important Art Museum of Great Greece in Italy (Magna Grecia). The most precious exhibit here are bronze soldiers from Riace, rare examples of Ancient Greece art and symbols of the city. Although Reggio Calabria is the oldest city of the region, it contains a lot of modern things as in 1908 it suffered from terrible earthquake. Therefore today in the center of Reggio you can see different styles, for example Neo-Gothic, neoclassicism, and fascist architecture. Embankment of the city is very beautiful, it was called by Gabriele D%27Annunzio “the most beautiful kilometer of Italy”. On the opposite side of the bay Sicily is seen, from another side city is supported by Aspromonte mountains. Among religious architecture Reggio Calabria cathedral stands out. Not far from the city center the castle Castello Aragoneso rises above. Local mafia is called “ndrangheta”, it is the most famous criminal group in Italy. Citizens grow jasmine and bergamot, oranges and olives. In one word, Reggio Calabria is a very colourful place.

Climate

Reggio Calabria is situated in the Mediterranean climate zone. Summer is dry and hot but air is cooled by African sirocco. Winter is mild and rainy. In general temperatures are temperate and climate is favorable for rest and living.

Transport

The nearest airport Tito Minniti, or Aeroporto dello Stretto, serves both Reggio Calabria and Messina. City is linked with Aeolian Islands, Malta and Messina by big sea port. Railway station of Reggio is one of the biggest in Italy. Bus network of the city is very well developed.
