Description:
Triest is the capital of the Friuli-Venezia Giulia region in Italy. A big imperial city in the past, Triest is located in the depth of the gulf of the same name, not far from the Italian-Slovenian border. Triest is a bridge between West and East due to its geographical position and history. Here you can see an orthodox church next to a catholic basilica or a Lutheran church. Also, Trieste has kept the traces of Roman and Austrian sway. Here people speak four languages (Italian, Ladin, Slovene and German), while Irish writer James Joyce created his "Ulisses" right here. It%27s better to start you walk from visiting the old Roman amphitheater, the Lighthouse of Victory or the castles Miramara and San Giusto. Triest has many palaces, with the Palazzo delle Poste and the Palazzo del Municipio being the most beautiful. Also in Trieste there are many museums, churches, wide squares, including the great Piazza di Unità d%27Italia, and aquarium. In January in Triest cinema festival is held while in October here the most famous world regatta happens.
Climate
Due to maritime position of the city, Triest has Mediterranean weather with mild winters and warm, not hot, summers. Average temperatures are around +6 in winters and +25 in summers.Transport
Triest is a big transport junction of Italy and the Balkans. The closest airport is the Trieste-Ronchi dei Legionari, that is located in the Gorizia province (33 km). From the airport to the auto station of Triest buses go, and from here you can get to Slovenia, Croatia and Austria both by bus and train. Also Triest has a port, one of the biggest in Italy.
