MATERA
Description:
Matera is a town in Basilicata and the capital of the same name province. It is famous in the whole world for its traditional districts Sassi that in 1993 were included in the UNESCO World Heritage list. Matera is a very old town, it was found by Greeks and was a part of Great Greece. Uniqueness of Matera is in its historic center: districts (Sassi) are built near deep ravine and separated by cliff. It seems that buildings are integrated into relief and cliffs, they are invisible at the first sight. Also there are castles, churches and cathedrals but all of them pale before general panorama of Matera. In summer exhibition of modern sculpture " Grandi Mostre nei Sassi" is held.

The nearest airport is Aeroporto Karol Wojtyla di Bari. At the moment Basilicata airport is being constructed, it will serve the region in future. Matera has its own railway station, also you can get there by bus.
