Description:

the capital of the district that is situated on Madeira Island and has the same name, a town with a population of more than 100 thousand people. The town got its name from fennel that grew here: "funcho" is name of this flavourful herb in Portuguese. The town was founded in the middle of the 15th century, it has always been a major port and trading centre. The rich historical heritage of Funchal is reflected in its architecture: the medieval Cathedral, the Sao Tiago yellow fort, the old town Zone Velha, the Mercado dos Lavradores market where one can buy exotic fruits and local craftsmen products. One can try the national cuisine in numerous cafes and restaurants in the coastal Avenida Do Mar street. Wonderful Funchal%27s beaches attract here thousands of tourists from all over the world. The most popular of them are: Praia de Sao Tiago, Praia Formosa that consists of 4 pebble and sandy beaches, Praia do Gorgulho. Doca do Cavacas and Lido are the swimming pool complexes with natural seawater and are also in high demand. All of them have a good infrastructure and offer any taste and budget options.

temperature throughout a year fluctuates from 16°C to 22°C. The registered maximum is 26°C and the minimum is 13°C. The heaviest rainfall is from November to February.

Transport

in 16 km from the town there is the International Madeira Airport. One can get here by boat, yacht or a cruise ship. There is a road network that connects Funchal to other towns of the island.
