Description:

A small town in the south of Portugal with a population of about 45.000 people, a seaport and one of the major centres of Algarve region. First settlements date back to the Roman times, the town was also ruled by the The Phoenicians, the Old Greeks were here yet the official date of its foundation is 1453. For some time P was known as a shelter for pirates, was a major centre of fishing and cannery industry. Now there is the Municipal Museum in one of its former cannery factories. P today is no longer an industrial or trading centre, its economy is based on tourism. The town offers rest for any budget: luxury villas co-exist here with budget-friendly flats, many of them are located right on the coast. Apart from the wonderful beaches the town can offer an interesting sightseeing programme: the historic centre of the town is a sight itself, the Fort Walls and Catarina Fort,Jesuit College and Monastery of Sáo Francisco, St. Mary%27s Church and Chapel of St Joseph.

Climate

Tropical Mediterranean. The daily temperature fluctuates around 10-15°C even in winter. Temperature seldom exceeds 30°C as the result of cool ocean breezes blowing. Water temperature goes up to 20°C in August and September. July and August have maximal hours of sunshine per day (12). The period from November to March receives the most of rainfall.

Transport

Portimao has its own airport, yet it has one runway and is used mainly by general aviation. The nearest international airport is located in 72 km from Portimao in Faro. One can use aerobuses or regular buses to travel to Portimao from the Faro Airport. One can also get to Portimao by sea: by yacht (there is a marina – a parking space for private yachts) or cruise liner (there is a terminal). The road and rail network connects Portimao with other Portuguese cities. One can get around Portimao by bus or taxi.
