Description:

The capital and the major port of Portugal, a city with more than 20-century old history. According to the archeological evidence, Lisbon’s territory was populated by Iberians, it was a major Phoenician port, a part of the Roman Empire, the Suebi and the Visigoths lived here. For more than 3 centuries it was under the Arab yoke and was conquered by the French in 1147, it became a capital city only a hundred years later though. Later it was almost completely destroyed by the strongest earthquake, restored it became the subject of interest to Napoleon Bonaparte. Many times it became an object to political games, its peaceful existence began with the end of the World War ǁ. All of these events couldn’t help but reflected in its architecture. It is truly unique not only for its buildings and monuments, Lisbon’s architecture is in its paved streets, curved roads, wide alleys – it is everywhere. Lisbon is a sight itself, yet the excursion-list of those who have little time may include the following: The Hieronymites Monastery, the watchtower Torre de Belem, Lisbon Cathedral, São Vicente de Fora Church, Conceição Velha Church, Lisbon Roques (Rock) Church, Edward VII Park, Praça do Comércio, Castle of São Jorge. The most interesting museums are: National Museum of Ancient Art, National Coach Museum, The Museum of Sacred Art, Galust Gyulbenkyan Museum. There are also modern sights that are worth visiting, for example, Nations Park that was constructed for an international exhibition and is now a favourite meeting and resting place for the locals. Lisbon is a Mecca not only to Portuguese football fans, here the world known teams Benfica and Sporting appeared. Football is the heart of Lisbon’s life, yet apart from this popular sports one can go in for golf and surfing on Lisbon Riviera.

Climate

Subtropical Mediterranean. Summers here are hot, winters are warm. Lisbon’s climate is considered one of the most favourable. Temperature may reach 30°C in summer and seldom goes lower than 8°C even in the coldest winter month January. Months from November to February receive most of the year’s rainfall.

Transport

There is Portela International Airport situated in the northern area of the city. One can get to the city centre by a specil bus ‘aerobus’, by usual public bus or taxi. There are 2 railway stations that connect Lisbon to other Portuguese cities. One can also get to Lisbon by sea – there are terminals that host cruise liners. One can get around the city by bus or bike.
