TALLINN
Description:
Tallinn, a major freight and passenger port and the capital of Estonia, is located on the Gulf of Finland near Helsinki. The city has almost completely preserved the historic layout of the XV century and many architectural monuments of that time. The most beautiful part of Tallinn - the Old Town - is included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. The Old Town includes such monuments as the Church of St. Olav, the Dominican Monastery, the Dome Cathedral, the Orthodox Alexander Nevsky Cathedral and, of course, the Tallinn City Hall. A significant part of the Old Town is Toompea, where in the Middle Ages Toompea Order Castle was built. A flag waving on top of one of the main castle towers (the tower is called "Tall Herman") is one of the symbols of Estonia. The symbol of the city is the Old Thomas - a weather vane mounted on the top of the Town Hall tower. In addition to historical and art museums there is also a medieval torture museum and a museum of occupations. In the former St. Nicholas Church you can see the world famous painting by Bernard Notke "Dance of Death." But the most valuable is the unique medieval atmosphere: small shops, mysterious fairy houses and almonds with spices sold on every corner will leave no one indifferent.
