LOURDES
Description:
Lourdes is a small French town on the border with Spain in the Hautes-Pyrenees region. Once a little unremarkable village, which lied on the path to the mineral springs of the Pyrenees, Lourdes has become known since 1858 after a young local woman Bernadette Soubirous had a vision of the Blessed Virgin Mary. In 1933, the Catholic Church carried out an investigation and concluded that the girl had said the truth and she was canonized under the name of St. Bernadette. Since then Lourdes annually is visited by about five million pilgrims revering the image of the Virgin Mary. Lourdes is divided into a "spiritual" and "French" part. Places of interest are- the Grotto of Massabielle, Sanctuary of Notre-Dame de Lourdes, built on the site of the first vision, home and other places associated with St. Bernadette%27s life, as well as the Old castle and wonderful mountain sceneries.
