GRACHEN
Description:
Grachen is a Switzerland village in the Valais canton in the Mattertal valley on the height of 1619 m above the sea level. Grachen was first mentioned in documents in XIII century. In 1433 there was found the first church (Kirche von Grächen). Residents of the village used to irrigate their fields with glacier water (Riedgletscher) and the oldest water pipe here is called Bineri. Today all water pipes are included in various excursion mountain routes. The majority of tourists come to Grachen in summer, these are mainly alpinists and devotees of mountain hiking. There are both short walking tours (7 hours) and longer (up to 3 days) and Grachen is a transit point. In winter people come here for skiing.

You can reach Grachen by railroad line Matterhorn-Gotthard-Bahn. It is also connected with the nearby village St. Niklaus by the highway.
