LOCARNO

Description:

Locarno is a city in Ticino canton (Switzerland) situated on the north extremity of Maggiore lake at the foot of Alp mountains. Except nature beauty Locarno is rich in cultural attractions. For example, so called Astrovia Locarno, the model of Solar system on a scale of 1 to 1 000 000 000, which parts are situated on the city streets. While strolling around old town you can meet Jupiter or some star. Other important landmark is sanctuary of Madonna del Sasso, situated above city in the Orselina place. You can reach it by funicular. Sanctuary was found in XC century and today it is the object of pilgrimage. In the Locarno suburbs there is the castle (Castello Visconteo) of XI century that served for a long time as the residence of city governor. Locarno cinema festival is also wide known.

Climate

Climate is continental. Winter is cold and wet with frequent snow falls. Summer is hot, dry and even sultry.

Transport

The nearest airport is in Lugano in the Agno municipality. Also in the distance of couple hours drive there are Milano airports that provide more airlines. Locarno is connected by railroad communications with other cities of Switzerland and Italy. You can get around the city by bus.
