BERN
Description:
Bern is Switzerland city and the capital of the same name canton. Official language here is German. Bern is the fourth largest city in Switzerland with its population of about 300 thousand people. Bern is situated on the plateau Schweizer Mittelland in the Aar River valley. It was found in 1191 by order of duke Berthold V. According to scientists, the name of the city comes from German word Bär (a bear) as it was the first animal caught in this area. In Bern there are plenty of landmarks, its historic center is in the UNESCO World heritage list. The special feature of Bern is that the old part has numerous sheds (arcades). The most interesting attractions are the Cathedral (Münster), Clock Tower (Zytglogge) and Bern fountains (Berner Brunnen).
