DURHAM
Description:
Durham is a lovely small town in North West England well known for its XI century Norman Cathedral that is in the UNESCO world heritage list. From XIX century cathedral walls are home to Durham University and the oldest student’s accommodation in the world. Students offer guided tours not only around cathedral but also around Durham castle. Town’s neighborhoods are good for a long walk. After one of them call on an old market and then go to any pub to taste local ale and lamb pie. Definitely worth a visit an open air museum in Beamish that exhibits reconstructed buildings from all northern-west England.
Climate
Climate is temperate maritime as anywhere in Great Britain but Durham is a bit sunnier and drier than other parts of the country. Summer is cool (temperatures above 20C are uncommon) and winter is mild (only a few nights have temperatures under 0C).Transport
If you want to enjoy stunning views then come to Durham by train (from London, York, Edinburgh, Manchester, Birmingham and other cities). Also Durham lies on the Cathedral Bus route that embraces several towns with outstanding cathedrals (the bus is not touristic). About 1 hour drive from Durham there is a port in North Shields from which you can go to Amsterdam and some Scandinavian cities.
