GLOUCESTER

Description:

Gloucester is a city in Gloucestershire that was found by Romans in 97 AD. Old Roman fortifications still exist under the city and you can explore them in a special museum. Famous Gloucester Cathedral became grandiose decoration for films about Harry Potter in which it serves as Hogwarts castle. Other outstanding places are XVIII century docks with numerous shops and museums, Prinknash Abbey with bird park and good Roman mosaic copy, and also Painswick village with lovely houses and a church. It is easy to get to the oldest Forest of Dean from Gloucester.

Climate

Climate is temperate maritime. Winter is mild (the coldest night temperature won’t fall under -9C) and summer is cool (temperatures above 25C are uncommon). The sunniest and the driest period is from April to September.

Transport

You can go without changing trains to London, Cardiff, Bristol (50 km) and Birmingham (70 km). In Cheltenham that is only 10 minutes from Gloucester there are more trains. Buses run to many cities in the area and also to some major airports of the country. Gloucester itself has many cycle routes (you even can go to Bristol).
