Description:
Portsmouth is a city in Hampshire situated on the Portsea Island with the population of about 200 thousand people. Throughout many centuries Portsmouth was an important port city. Till present day the oldest dry dock in the world is still in use there, it places many famous vessels. Portsmouth has many notable places: oldest cathedrals, XVI century castle, various museums, the Spinnaker Tower with breathtaking views, beaches, University and more. Moreover, Portsmouth is a home town of Charles Dickens and in addition there lived for some time H.G. Wells, Arthur Conan Doyle and Rudyard Kipling.
Climate
Climate is temperate maritime as in the whole Great Britain but considerably milder that in many areas of the country. Frosts are uncommon, snow is extremely rare. Summer is warm ant Portsmouth has more sunny hours than anywhere in the country.Transport
London is only 100 km away, Southampton airport is 40 km away. Railroad and bus communications connect Portsmouth with almost all parts of the country. Direct trains go to London (1,5 hour), Cardiff (3 hours), Brighton (1 hour 40 minutes), Southampton (1 hour) and more. Also there are ferries from France and Spain (Balboa).
