SAINT ANDREWS

Description:

St Andrews is a small town in Scotland (Fifeshire) on the North Sea coast with the population of about 17 thousand people. It is known worldwide first of all thanks to splendid golf courses but there are plenty of other unique sights. In VIII century there was laid the foundation of the church in Saint Andrew’s name that became the center of a new settlement (today grandiose building is in ruins). In medieval times St Andrews became the Ecclesiastical capital of Scotland. St Andrews University is considered to be one of the most prestigious in Great Britain (during 2001-2005 Prince William studied Art History here) and one of the oldest in the world. You can spend several days in St Andrews enjoying beautiful views of the bay, castle and tower ruins, cozy chapels, beaches and more. During the whole year you can watch for seals while in August there come whales.

Climate

Climate is temperate maritime. In spite of the fact that St Andrews lies on the same latitude as Moscow and Labrador, winter here is very mild (during the daytime temperature usually doesn’t fall under 4C, but during nights the are light frosts). Summer is cool with only a few days in July with temperature near 25C. Precipitations are light but cold winds are frequent.

Transport

The nearest international airport is in Edinburgh (85 km), also you can fly to London from Dundee (25 km). The nearest railway station is in Leuchars (direct trains to London, Edinburgh and Dundee).
