Description:
Edinburgh is the capital city of Scotland, the second largest city in Scotland and the seventh most populated in the United Kingdom. The City of Edinburgh Council is one of Scotland%27s 32 local government council areas. The council area includes urban Edinburgh and a 30-square-mile (78 km2) rural area. Edinburgh is the seat of the Scottish Parliament. It is built on volcanic hills. The city was one of the major centers of the intellectual movement "the Enlightenment", led by the University of Edinburgh and earning it the nickname Athens of the North. The Old Medieval Town and New Town districts of Edinburgh were listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1995. The city is well-known for its annual Festival, a collection of official and independent festivals, held annually over four weeks from early August. Visitors to Edinburgh also appreciate its excellent museums.
Climate
Like much of the rest of Scotland, Edinburgh has a temperate, maritime climate which is relatively mild despite its northern latitude. The daytime temperatures in the winter rarely fall below freezing. Summer temperatures are normally moderate with daily average rarely exceeding 22 °C.Transport
The Lothian buses offer the basic public transport when visiting Edinburgh. The Edinburgh Waverley station is the main railway station in Edinburgh. Edinburgh is a major transport hub for East Central Scotland and the city is connected by rail to all the major cities in Great Britain. As Edinburgh is also a well-known traffic congested city, the best way to get around is by walking. Edinburgh international airport with its domestic and international flights is the eighth international airport in Great Britain and it is located 8 miles from the city center to the west.
