The capital city of Costa Rica with a population of a bit more than 300.000 people. San Jose is the largest city in the country. First settlements appeared here in the 1970s. For a long time San Jose was a small village and got its capital status from the first president Juan Mora Fernándezonly only in 1824. Before that time it was Cartago, an old Spanish colonial capital. San Jose is a friendly city offering many interesting experiences. One can try the local cuisine in one of its numerous cafes and restaurants located in the old Mercado market, in Bar y Restaurante Antiguo Poás de San Jose or at the Hotel Grano de Oro restaurant. Here you will be served with multiple exotic dishes starting with inked squids and finishing with pancakes with bananas and fried macadamia nuts. One can buy souvenirs as well as handmade products in the local market Mercado Artesania or in El Pueblo shopping mall. The list of the most interesting museums include: the Golden Museum (Museo Oro Precolombino) where one can see the unique gold wares, the Jade Museum (Museo del Jade) with ancient jade jewelry, the National (Museo Nacional) and the Children%27s Discovery Museum (Museo de los Niños). One can get to the city by plane – in 15 km from San Jose’s centre there’s an international airport. There are direct flights to Mexicam Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua and Panama. One can get around the city by taxi, there is a big terminal of comfortable buses. To get around San Jose many tourists use bikes.
