AIKEN
Description:
Aiken is a city in Southern Carolina with the population of about 30 thousand people. It was incorporated in 1835 and named after William Aiken who was the founder of the railroad company in Charleston. In 19th century Aiken was popular as winter residence among American wealthy people. Today it is famous for its steeplechases and flat races with Thoroughbred horses. Several historic structures have preserved in the city center including St. Mary Help of Christians Catholic Church and Whitehall. Aiken is also home for University of South Carolina, Technical College and Ecology Laboratory.
