The capital city of a state, Florianopolis is situated on the Island of Santa Catarina and ncludes the nearby small islands. Up to the end of the 19th century F had a different name, which was changed to the today’s one in honour of the second Republc of Brazil Floriano Peixoto. The city has a rich colonial history that is reflected in its magnificent architecture. Many buildings and monuments are historical heritage and are protected by the state. Hercílio Luz International Airport hosts both domestic and international flights. The well-developed road network connects Florianopolis with other Brazilian cities: one can get here from Rio de Janeiro, Sao Paolo, Curitiba and Porto Alegre. One can use bus to get around the city, there is a big depot of comfortable buses. A bike-supporting programme made it one of the favourite means to get around the city.
