Description:
The capital city of a state, Florianopolis is situated on the Island of Santa Catarina and ncludes the nearby small islands. Up to the end of the 19th century F had a different name, which was changed to the today’s one in honour of the second Republc of Brazil Floriano Peixoto. The city has a rich colonial history that is reflected in its magnificent architecture. Many buildings and monuments are historical heritage and are protected by the state. The rough must-see sightseeing list may include: The Santa Cruz Fortress, São José da Ponta Grossa Fortress and Santo Antônio Fortress were constructed to guard the city from the Spanish and Dutch; the former government residence now The Cruz e Souza Museum, the established in 1898 public market where one can buy local food or handicrafted goods. Canasvieiras, Praia Brava, Jurerê, Praia Mole, Barra da Lagoa, Campeche, Armação and other 35 beaches attract to F thousands of tourists annually. Some of them host both national and international surfing competitions.
Climate
Humid subtropical. In summer temperature fluctuates around 27-29°C, it seldom goes lower than 20°C in winter. There is no dry season, months from January to March receive the heaviest rainfall.Transport
Hercílio Luz International Airport hosts both domestic and international flights. The well-developed road network connects Florianopolis with other Brazilian cities: one can get here from Rio de Janeiro, Sao Paolo, Curitiba and Porto Alegre. One can use bus to get around the city, there is a big depot of comfortable buses. A bike-supporting programme made it one of the favourite means to get around the city.
