A capital city with a population of a bit more than 600 thousand people. Joao Pessoa got its name in 1930 in honour of the well-known Brazilian politician who was born in this state and was assassinated. The UN rated it the second greenest city in the world, giving its way only to Paris. Joao Pessoa is notorious not only for its multiple parks with ornamental and fruit trees, the city can boast of the vast natural Atlantic woodlands Parque da Bica и Mata do Buraquinho. They are situated in the centre of the city and play an important role in creating a wonderful microclimate. Yet its natural resources is not the only thing which Joao Pessoa is rich in, the city has a rich history. It was founded by the Portuguese in 1585 as a fortress which was planned to guard the mouth of the Paraiba river from the French attacks, yet it surrendered to the Dutch. It all was reflected in its beautiful architecture. Any excursion includes such famous colonial and imperial architectural sites as Saint Francis Church, a former warehouse and now a museum Casa de Pólvora, Saint Anthony Convent. There are beaches in Joao Pessoa though most of them are located quite far from the city centre, the most popular of them are: Kabu-Branku, Penha, Tambau, Ponta do Seixas, Tambaba.

Climate

Humid tropical. The heat of summer months is compensated by ocean breezes. Throughout a year temperature seldom goes lower than 20°C and may exceed 30°C in summer. The period from May to July receives the heaviest rainfall, from October to January the weather is relatively dry.

In 8 km from the city there is Presidente Castro Pinto International Airport. One can get around Joao Pessoa by bus or taxi, there are single road and rail tickets
