Description:

Salvador is the 3d largest city in Brazil, the capital of state Salvador and a major seaport in the north-east of the country. Situated at the entrance to the Bay of all Saints, it owes its name to the Portuguese, who came here in the 16th century and called it %27Sao Salvador da Bahia de Todos os Santos%27 which means %27the Holy Savior of the Bay of all Saints%27. Since it had been founded the city was the Brazilian capital, but with the decreasing demand for sugar-cane and strengthening of the role of gold it had to give this status to Rio. The rich historical heritage of the city is reflected in its magnificent colonial architecture and is announced UNESCO World Heritage. The Pelourinho quarter, The Cathedral Basilica, St. Francis Church and Nunnery, Church of Nosso Senhor do Bonfim, Museum of Contemporary Art, Museum od Sacred Art - this is a far from complete must-see list of Salvador sights. The modern city can also offer lots of interesting things, for example, to take a ride in one of the %27Elevador Lacerda%27 four elevators, that connect the Upper and Lower city and carrying thpusands of people annually. One can also take a walk in the Model Market (Mercado Modelo) district, buy products of local craftsmen and try national cuisine in one of its numerous restaurants.

Climate

Humid tropical. Temperature throughout a year is quite stable and fluctuates around 21-30°С, with maximum registered at 37°С, which is typical for winter, and 12°С minimum of June and July. The rainfall is moderate and doesn%27t depend on season.

Transport

There%27s Deputado Luis Eduardo Magalhaes International Airport that is situated in 20 km from the city and operates direct flights to the USA, Spain, Germany, Portugal, UK, Chile, Uruguay, Argentina and Paraguay. The developed road and rail network, the metro is under construction.
