BELO HORIZONTE
Description:
A capital city in the south-east of Brazil. Its name is of the Portuguese origin and means “A beautiful horizon”, it is one of few Brazilian cities that were planned. Belo Horizonte was founded in 1893 as a substitute to Minas Gerais, the former state’s capital. Belo Horizonte is an example of Brazilian architectural tradition. The brightest example is Pampulha Centre constructed by one of the most famous Brazilian architects Oscar Niemeyer. It is a complex that includes Belo Horizonte Museum of Art, Sao Francisco de Assis Church, The Dance Academy, Iemanja Monument, Juscelino Kubitschek House, the Zoo-Botanical Foundation Headquarters, the mineral exhibitions. The complex is announced as the historic heritage and is protected by the state. Other interesting sights include: the Freedom Palace that’s built in the neoclassical style as the result of the French influence and is now the seat of government; the History Museum, the Art Palace, the Museum of Mineralogy. One can buy various mineral products of unique beauty in Minas shops, the local market Feira de Arte e Artesanato offers many craftsmen’s wares.
Climate
Tropical, has two seasons: weather during the first one that lasts from August to September is cool and dry. Second lasts from October to March and has the heaviest rainfall. Temperature throughout a year fluctuates around 26-28°C and seldom reaches 30°C. January is the hottest month, the coolest one is July.Transport
There are 2 airports: Pampulha-Carlos Drummond de Andrade Airport hosts domestic flights, while Tancredo Neves-Confins Airport hosts international flights. One can get around the city by taxi or bus, there is a big bus depot and a well-developed road network.
