Description:

Arequipa is the second most populated city in Peru, it is situated in Ands on the height of more than 2000 m above sea level. Arequipa is surrounded by numerous extinct volcanoes among which stand out three: El Misti, Chachani and Pichu-Pichu. Earthquakes and volcano eruptions disturbed Arequipa for several times. In XVII century it was completely destroyed. Historic center (today in the UNESCO World Heritage List) was built again with white volcanic stone therefore Arequipa is often called White city (La Ciudad Blanca). In St Lazarus district old houses made of clay and straw had been preserved. Amazing landscapes, colonial architecture and superb cuisine made Arequipa third most visited city in Peru.

Arequipa is served by Rodriguez Ballon Airport and if you are not inclined to adventurism plane is the best way to reach Arequipa (flights from Lima, Cusco, Huliaka). Lima is 1000 km away, you can cover this distance by bus (17 hours) but try to avoid cheap companies. Also buses run to Cusco (9 hours), Puno (6 hours), Pisco (13 hours), Naska (9 hours) and Takana (7 hours). City center can be easily explore don foot.
