Stay at the Azzahra Hotel when you come to Israel to see the sights of the Old City. A reasonably priced East Jerusalem hotel, it has an excellent location a 10 minute walk from the Damascus Gate (Sha'ar Shkhem). Originally constructed as a private home approx. 100 years ago, the Azzahra Hotel is today a small hotel that offers travelers affordable rooms and personable service. The Azzahra Restaurant is known locally for its Middle Eastern cuisine but also serves a variety of French and Mediterranean dishes, with wines from Europe and South America. It’s the only restaurant in Jerusalem that has a brick oven for making thin-crust Italian-style pizzas. This hotel is just off Azzahra Street (sometimes spelled A-Zahra Street). It is in close proximity to the Rockefeller Museum (formerly called the Palestine Archaeological Museum), which was built in 1938 and was the first archaeological museum in the Middle East. A short walk south of the Azzahra Hotel, you can enter the Old City via either Herod's Gate or the Damascus Gate. Key sights inside the Old City include the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in the Christian Quarter; the Dome of the Rock (currently off-limits to non-muslim visitors) in the Muslim Quarter; the Western Wall and Hurva Square in the Jewish Quarter; and the Citadel and St. James Cathedral in the Armenian Quarter.
